Although they are easy to use, basic drawing tools don't have many uses, especially when there are so many third party applications out there, which have much more to offer. Pinta combines the basic appearance of a lightweight painting application with some of the features that you would expect to find on advanced editors. In other words, you can draw and paint just like in a basic application, but you can also apply special effects, make visual adjustments and perform other advanced operations.

Pinta allows you to work on your images in a familiar environment. Its user interface looks and feels like that of other image editors. You can find its main drawing and editing tools and a color palette on separate panels, on the left side of the window. Options for creating a new project, opening existing images, cutting, pasting and performing other basic actions, can be found on a toolbar. What's more, Pinta allows you to work with layers, which can be created and sorted on the right side of the interface, where you can also switch between loaded images.

Layers can be duplicated, blended and merged. Furthermore, you can change a layer's blending mode from normal to multiply, color dodge, glow and many others. Besides creating and manipulating layers, you can also make a series of general adjustments, like changing the picture's brightness and contrast, hue and saturation, modifying its luminosity curve and more.

A number of special effects are categorized in one of the top menus. They are applied instantly, when you select them. When you apply an effect, a small window will show up on your screen, on which you can tweak the applied effect. It should also be mentioned that Pinta works with all popular image formats, including JPG, BMP, PNG or TIFF.

Pros

The application includes various tools, for basic or advanced editing tasks. Also, Pinta allows you to create and manipulate layers. The user interface is clean and simple and its options are easy to understand.

Cons

There are no serious drawbacks to mention. Pinta allows you to enjoy the simplicity of a basic paint utility and the functionality of advanced editors at the same time.
